Have You Made Room For Your Creativity? 3 Reasons to create your creative space

Have You made Room For Your Creativity?

This week I had the opportunity to step into the creative space of another artist, my friend Abigail Dowd.  Abigail is an extraordinary singer/songwriter, but she happens to have many talents and interests.  She is also a bookbinder and I happen to be in need of her bookbinding skills for a personal project I’ve been working on.

Luckily for us in this time of global pandemic, Abigail’s studio space is in her garage so it’s a big wide-open ventilated space and of course, we were both masked up to keep each other safe.  Now, when I say Abigail’s space is in her garage, don’t get the wrong idea, it’s not things scattered around here and there, nor under old paint cans, or tucked in next to boxes full of god-knows-what being stored.  No, that is the opposite of this beautiful space she has created, a cozy corner artist’s office for herself with two beautiful work desks, rolls of beautiful paper, and a large bookcase of beautiful books! It’s the type of space you want to be in and best of all, you want to get to work creating in!  Her creative space calls to anyone in it beckoning you to make! I’m not a bookbinder and I’m sure I’ve never before even thought of binding a book until I stepped into her space and looked at her tools, paperweights, and got a sneak peek at her many beautiful pieces of paper all special ordered with care.

After a few hours talking with her about life and talking a little bit about my project I went home inspired and excited to revisit my own creativity and my own creative space.  I’m lucky in some ways because I live alone and have the luxury of being able to try to make my whole house a creative inspiration, cozy yet inviting you to feel inspired.  I don’t have to negotiate the space with anyone else so I’m able to design it all how I like.

During the pandemic my normal office has become my “Yoga Studio” and I keep things pushed out of the way in order to have room to teach the classes and film them for two weekly zoom sessions.  So my dining room became my primary office and creative workspace.

When I’m really busy, this is actually what my creative space looks like. I try to clear the table before I get my paints out to start with a clear head but that doesn’t always happen.

I try to keep it tidy when possible but that is not always how it looks.  Today I’m sharing pictures with you of my primary creative space in hopes that maybe it will inspire you the way Abigail’s space inspired me.

If you haven’t yet created a creative space for yourself, I want to encourage you to carve it out.  A place where you can leave your creative tools out for a day if need be when you are working on a project.  Even if you can’t devote a whole room to your creativity, maybe you can carve out a shelf or a dresser drawer or a corner of a garage.  I want to encourage you to comment below and let us know your “must have’s” in your creative space and if you feel called share a picture of your creative space too.

I believe it’s important for you to create a creative space for these three reasons.

1) You are literally and figuratively showing your creative spirit that you have made space for it to flourish.

2) Your creative space will invite and inspire you to create

3) If all of your creative tools are in one place it makes it easier and more accessible to begin when you feel inspired.

Carve out your creative space, or give it a deep cleaning or a refresh and see what happens!
