Shifting From Fixed Mindset to Growth as an Entrepreneur

In 2017 I took a 7 month long applied positive psychology certification through The Flourishing Center. We did a deep dive into Carol Dweck’s research on mindset and it couldn’t be more relevant to being a business owner or entrepreneur! The great news is that if you get hung up in a fixed mindset you can actually do a lot to shift to a growth mindset that will positively impact your life and your business! Here are excerpts from the flourishing center class that will help you in your life and work.

Carol Dweck says there are 4 steps to changing mindsets and I believe they will impact your business for the better when you apply them regularly.

  1. Learn to hear your fixed mindset voices

  2. Recognize you have a choice

  3. Talkback to your fixed mindset voice

  4. Take the growth mindset action

Here are a few examples:

Fixed mindset says: "Are you sure you can do it? Maybe I don't have the talent"
Growth Mindset Answers: "I'm not sure I can do it now, but I think I can learn to with time and effort"

Fixed Mindset Says: "What if you fail--- you'll be a failure"
Growth Mindset Answers: "All successful people had failures along the way!"

Fixed Mindset Says: "If you don't try, you can protect your dignity"
Growth Mindset Answers: "If I don't try, I automatically fail. Where's the dignity in that?"

When you hit a setback

Fixed Mindset Says: "This would have been a snap if you really had talent"
Growth Mindset Says: "Actually that's wrong! Basketball wasn't easy for Michael Jordan and science wasn't easy for Thomas Edison. They had passion AND put in a ton of effort!"

As You Face Criticism:

Fixed Mindset Says: "It's not my fault. It's something or someone else's fault"
Growth Mindset Answers: "If I don't take responsibility, I can't fix it. Let me Listen- however painful it is- and learn whatever I can. Then..."
